DOES STRETCH FILM EXPIRE? SHELF LIFE AND STORAGE TIPS

Stretch film, a type of plastic film used to wrap and secure products, generally does not have an explicit expiration date. However, while it does not have a fixed shelf life, its quality may degrade over time if not stored properly. The durability of stretch film largely depends on factors such as storage conditions, material composition, and the environmental exposure it experiences.

Stretch film is usually made of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), which is designed to be durable, flexible and strong. This material allows stretch film to last for years without significant degradation. However, like any plastic, exposure to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight and changing humidity can reduce its performance. High temperatures can cause the film to soften and lose its elasticity, while prolonged exposure to UV light can cause brittleness, and discoloration. Moisture may not directly damage the film, but it can affect the way the film interacts with the wrapped surface, especially if the stretch film has been stored for a long time.

To maximize the longevity of stretch film, it should be stored in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight. Warehouses and storage facilities that maintain a stable temperature at room temperature, ideally between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), will help ensure the film remains flexible and effective for longer periods. Good storage practices can maintain the quality of stretch film for up to 12-18 months, even longer, without significant signs of wear.

Another factor that affects the durability of stretch film is its thickness and type. Thicker or heavy-duty films tend to be more resistant to environmental changes and last longer in storage compared to thin, economy-grade films. Also, newer types of stretch film are often produced with additives to improve its UV resistance and durability, which can extend its shelf life under various conditions.

In short, stretch films do not have a specific expiration date, but their effectiveness may decrease over time if exposed to unfavorable conditions. By controlling storage conditions, its quality can be maintained for up to several years.
